Speck went on point I forgot the camera so I walked to the house came back and he was still in there. You can tell he keeps his nose to the ground when he points.

Speck's day at the beach. Speck is a great dog in a lot of aspects but he won't be a life guard even in 80 deg water. Water is for drinking he said even if you get fed bits of bbq steak as a bribe to get in. It took a couple of hours and some grooming, while sitting on my lap in the deep end to get him to take a swim and come out with the fun meter working. He needs to spend an afternoon around some kids and a pool to make him really enjoy the water.

Grooming & Inspection

Speck has been bathed bi-weekly he likes his bath and grooming sessions. He will lay or sit down during the middle of these sessions I have been correcting that by tapping him on his hind leg with the brush and giving the commanding UP. Speck’s temperament is subdued and calm during grooming. His teeth have been cleaned using a soft wood cuticle stick. Speck has just received his summer hair cut and grooming is much quicker now. He has shown to be more activity since the haircut; he doesn’t heat up as quickly. Speck has had his 1yr shots and the Vet inspection went well.

Speck is the best student when it comes to in-house training he has calmed the quickest of the three brothers. He will lie at my feet for extended periods of time. I have left him unattended with Babe in the living room. He will find things to chew if not given chew toys. He will lie on a pet bed and he crates well. Speck has tendencies to jump up on low furniture. (My training mistake with the bath scales, OOP’s) I’m correcting that as required. The mistake proves one thing, Speck is a quick study I only showed him one time how to get on the coffee table to get weighed. He has not forgotten that after all this time. I have not caught Speck potting in the house yet. I wish I could so I could give him training. Speck understands the “Quiet” command, which is spoken with a clinched fist under the jaw as a visual signal. Speck is a slow selective eater he will not eat until I have left the immediate area even after given permission to eat, he will drink slightly on command. Speck follows the heel command on door entrance but will escape on exit if not watched.

Speck has traveled in the front and back seat of my pickup also chained in the bed under the canopy and in a crate. He travels well and lies down almost immediately after I get under way. He has shown no signs of carsickness. He has been walked in busy parking lots and handles those conditions OK. He will kennel with physical help on command in a vehicle, in the pond, on too and ATV, and in a RV. Because of Speck’s size I like to pick him up to load in a vehicle. When I first trained Speck to kennel in the back of a pickup he fell off the ramp I was using he doesn’t like to kennel up a ramp now.

Speck travels well chained on the back of an ATV he enjoys watching for birds and rabbits on the side of the road. I have only had Speck to the road crossing a couple of times there will be more of this training as we go to the bird grounds.

Speck heels well until he gets close to what he thinks the objective is then he tries to rush ahead, this will go away with more training sessions. He only shows this after lying off training for a period of time. It will be an out he’ll probably always try to use. I have not taught down. Speck was trained to sit by the breeder before I got him so it has been an uphill battle to get him to stay on his all fours while training, it only shows when he gets bored while yard training but not on bird training. Speck has shown no signs of noise shyness. He spends several hours a week calmly tied to a chain gang. He will whoa on and off lead about 70% of the time without distractions he knows the whoa command and the release command of OK.

Speck and his friends spend time in the bull pen waiting for cat, old dog, and furniture training.

Speck has a very strong natural pointing instinct. He is sight pointing here. I can pick him up, put him on an atv, and he will still be pointing if he can see the feathers.

When you tie dogs to a common chain as they pull and resist the chain they condition each other to be tied out, they calm quickly. Also by feeding them shortly after they calm they accept the chain gang as good stuff. They will spend a lot of time here waiting their turn for training.
